Well London provides a framework for communities and local organisations to work together to improve health and well-being, build resilience and reduce inequalities. Our approach engages the most disadvantaged communities and empowers people to:
• build their individual and community capacity for health, well-being and resilience.
• engage, shape and take action on specific health and well-being needs and issues.
Importantly, Well London integrates with and adds value to what is already going on locally to maximize resources and ensure value for money. The Well London framework comprises two types of activities:
   1. Community Capacity Building activities and resources for all neighbourhoods.
   2. Action on specific local needs and issues is taken forward through a portfolio of themed activities and projects. These are determined by the needs and issues identified by each community through the CEAD process. These can include, for example: local action to improve healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, local environments and cultural and arts activity.
Processes that stimulate on going community engagement, grow participation, volunteering, community networks and community cohesion are built into all Well London activities.

Themed Projects

In Phase 1 , eight Theme Projects focused on mental well-being, physical activity, healthy eating, open spaces, or arts and culture . Not all of them took place everywhere and the final mix of projects was based on the needs identified during the community engagement work.

The individual theme projects are described in more detail on the Phase 1 Theme Projects page:
In Phase 2 , projects have tended to emerge from the same themes as Phase 1 but are less specified. A Well London programme is not limited to these themes, but can be expanded to include other areas of interest such as employment, environment, or other health promotion themes. In Phase 2, projects have tended to be commissioned through a mixture of Participatory Budgeting or direct tendering.

Well London includes fourteen projects of two kinds: heart of the community projects ; and theme projects .

Heart of the community projects
These are projects that will deliver community engagement and capacity building by:

increasing access to Well London projects and other health improvement opportunities and
brokering changes in local service provision and activities to meet community need, as well as
ensuring access to all sectors of the community to our theme projects.

CADBE (Community engagement, assessment, design, brokerage, enterprise) - our groundbreaking research and evaluation framework. (UEL)
Youth.community - will make sure that children and young people are included in all aspects of the programme. (Central YMCA)
Well London Delivery teams (2 each with 10 SOAs) - will form teams of 5+ volunteers in each area to empower people to make healthier choices. (LSx and Central YMCA)
Training communities - will plan and deliver a variety of training for community members to support project delivery of the other projects. (SLaM)
Wellnet - will establish a learning network for communities and professionals across all the projects to share lessons learnt. Will include events, newsletters and web site. (LSx)
Active Living Map - will use GIS technology to produce web-based maps for each SOA which will draw together in a single resource a broad range of well being opportunities within easy reach of each community. (Groundwork London)

six heart of the community projects will take place in all 20 areas and will support local organisations and help people gain new skills. These projects will help people access local services and signpost them to local activities. They will develop over the lifetime of Well London to reach out and involve the widest possible range of people in the area including older people, disabled people and other so-called hard to reach groups.

Theme projects

eight theme projects focused on mental well-being, physical activity or healthy eating. Each of these projects is based on a different Well London theme. Not all of them will happen everywhere and the final mix will be based on the needs identified during the community engagement work.

The mix of projects in each target area will be based on local needs identified during the community engagement work.

These projects are based on the five themes of the Well London programme:

Culture and Tradition

Be Creative, Be Well - will use the arts and cultural activity to help engage communities and individuals in a process of change, to improve environments and provide accessible physical activities. (Arts Council England, London)

Healthy Eating

Buywell - will make it easier to buy good quality, affordable and culturally sensitive food locally through influencing what's already there and setting up new schemes based on local need. (LSx)
Eatwell - will increase rates of healthy eating and promote a sense of community through celebrating good food and practical activities like cook and eat clubs. (LSx)

Mental health and well-being

DIY Happiness - will use humour, creativity and evidence emerging from the field of positive psychology to provide practical advice and information that will increase people's ability to 'bounce back' from adversity, reduce both the physical and the psychological impact of stress, increase resilience, and build durable personal resources. (SLaM)
Mental well-being Impact Assessment - enables stakeholders to identify the potential impacts on mental well-being of their proposals/projects/programmes (SLaM)
Changing minds - will recruit and train local people with direct experience of mental ill health to deliver mental health awareness training in target communities. It will empower people to use their experience to help reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by many people with mental health problems and promote understanding of mental health and well-being. (SLaM)

Open spaces
Healthy Spaces - physical improvements to the local environment that involve the local community in every step from planning to implementation will be complemented by structured programmes of activities. (Groundwork London)

Physical activity

Activate London - will increase physical activity levels through increasing the range of sports and active recreation activities available to the community through signposting existing opportunities and delivering new activities. (Central YMCA)
