Westminster Arts, London Print Studio

The project was initially offered as two parts: a textiles project and a creative writing project. Though Well London has only funded one of the projects, Westminster Arts has still maintained links between the two, and works were presented together. The book of writing contained images from the textiles project. This ended with the creation of a group poem, which will also go into the book. The book was edited and the textiles mounted for a Well London event at the Beethoven centre in February 2011 and an event at the library in March.

The work they undertook was beautiful and with guidance from the artist much deeper and more complex than they were expecting. Owing to disclosure of quite personal memories the group became very bonded and supportive, and something much more than an arts workshop. The writing workshop started with two quite distinct tables, one of Bengali women and one of other local women, interestingly all not born in Queens Park. However, the level of support for people for whom English was not their first language was high, as well as an interest in people’s backgrounds and life stories, and, by the second week, the two groups were mixing.

This is something I am doing for the first time - it was very interesting what we did, it makes your mind more creative and gives you more ideas and thoughts. You can go wild and use your imagination. Textiles Project Participant
