CTR Triangle

In 2001, a group of Newham Council tenants in Canning Town, Newham, formed their own tenant management organisation (TMO). Called CTR Triangle, the organisation now manages around 300 properties. Since December 2009 the landlord has delivered Well London programmes within the local area.

Robert Churchill of CTR Triangle has overseen the project: "I've worked here for five years. The TMO had always stood out as a little island, this tenant-managed co-op, and they didn't have a great relationship with the council."

"What Well London money did for us was bring us out of our isolation. It changed the perception of us; I think we were seen [by the council] as battling tenants, always moaning, and so it was a wonderful thing for us, in that final year and a half of Well London, to get that recognition from Newham council. We went from being seen as people who were always demanding things to people who could bring in something new."

"Karen Taylor [from Well London delivery partner the Arts Council] found us. We were coming up as an area that wasn't participating in other programmes, so Karen came to our board meeting and explained what was going on."

"We had a wonderful summer programme – we had drama with Stratford theatre, we got money to put a new kitchen in the community hall so we could hold the cook and eat sessions there; that brought hat hall back into use. We formed a boxing club, and we also trained youth ambassadors.

"And all the things we got from Well London also allowed us, the landlord, to break out of the 'just a rent-collector' role. It improved the relationship between tenants and the TMO, it has created friendships across communities. We've had big turnouts for everything."

"We had kids playing football in the car park here, banging against cars. So using money from Well London we got a football coach in, to get them to go into the park and play about, and take ownership of a park that they had been frightened to go into. We built their confidence with the coaches and took them in there. It changes what we are - we can help out instead of just enforcing rules."

"I do think it's been a success. The boxing club sustains itself now; we trained our caretaker here to quite a high level in the boxing club and we have five trainers now, so we no longer have to pay because we can train people ourselves. We've had a walking club grant we've done five walks in the country and in London, and we’ve had a coach-load every time. We've had to turn people away from the cook and eat classes; we’ve got 12 young people on the boxing course. We've got much more capacity now to do things."

"We've got little embryonic things like that that enable us to keep going. It's all going to continue."
