I remember filling in a Well London questionnaire and was asked what I'd like to see in the local area. I replied that there should be more activities for parents and children to take part in together, so I was really pleased to see this cookery course on offer for me and my daughter. We have both really enjoyed it Participant

 Farmstead Rd Community Garden

Three years ago, the patch of land surrounded by redbrick houses in a corner of Lewisham was an overgrown, flytipped eyesore. Today, thanks to work by Well London, environmental charity Groundwork and Phoenix Community Housing (PCH) - the landowner and local social landlord - it has been transformed.

Much of Farmstead Road Community Garden is taken up by allotment-sized plots. Some are tended by local gardeners, others belong to the local primary schools. One end of the garden is peppered with saplings that will yield plums, apples and pears when mature, and a new disabled-access path runs almost the entire length of the space.

"We started work in April 2009," says Giovanna Speciale, community and education projects officer for Groundwork, the delivery partner running Well London's Healthy Spaces project. "This was covered in brambles and Japanese knotweed clearing it was a big job."

In September last year, the garden and its growers hosted a community feast. Around 80 people came along to eat food made from the garden's first crop of produce. It's mostly fallow at the moment, of course, but preparations are underway for planting. Local resident Betty Sawyer tends a plot along with her granddaughter Amy. "It's all coming along," says Ms Sawyer. "It’s nice to come down and meet people, too, and the kids have loads of fun here."

It looks as though most of the heavy lifting has already been done, but as PCH's partnership co-ordinator Trevor Pybus explains, this garden will continue to soak up cash for another couple of years. "It will take around £15,000 a year for another two years to make it sustainable," he says. When the Well London funding comes to an end in March, the garden will be transferred into community ownership and the gardeners, with help from PCH, will be left to run things themselves.

"There is lots to think about," says Mr Pybus, "But there is more than enough will here to keep this going."

There is already talk among the gardeners about fundraising. ‘We’re looking for donations,’ someone calls out as the gate closes. The momentum is certainly in place here.

"We're going to try our best," says Ann Marie Palmer, a passionate gardener who has been involved with Farmstead Road since the beginning. "The more plot-holders there are, the more the community will become involved. We've got six plots opening up - hopefully we can keep maintaining it." March 2011
